Those are the words of an inspiring song by John Legend. I believe it’s a message that every one of us as Zambians needs to hear.

Friend, I have heard a lot of things being said lately in the press and generally. Many of us are unhappy and discouraged by the politics of today. They seem more concerned about who is more handsome than whom and what animal gave birth to whom than the country.

Well, I am not here to talk about those cheap politics because I believe they have wasted enough of our time and distracted us long enough.

I am here to talk about you. You see, in the midst of all this confusion and lack of direction I want to tell you that if you want Zambia to change, you cannot wait for politicians to do it. If you want Zambia to change, you must do your part. You are part of the people to bring about the change.

So rather than complain or get defeated by what is going on I want to tell you to get up, take a stand and do your part.

You see, you don’t need to be a politician to change things. You don’t need to be in government to change things. All you need to make a difference to this country is your own personal vision and determination.

So in your search for someone to lead I want you to know, that YOU are that leader. There is a reason that you are called a Zambian and there is a purpose to your being here at this time. Look at yourself, your job, your knowledge, your skills, what you’re passionate about. Then go on and work to be the best that you can be at it. Lead, wherever you are.

It is time for us to move on from the politics of yesterday and the mediocrity we have now come to accept as normal in some many things to do with this country. Let us each strive for excellence and positive impact in our circles of influence. Let us move forward with purpose and determination.

So that, in the words of our anthem, we may sing of Zambia - proud and free. So that we may be all one, strong and free. Free to live healthy, prosperous and fulfilled lives. Free to live out our fullest potential – so that we may each make a difference to this nation.
